Due to air quality issues in the region, districts across Alameda County have made a collective decision to close schools tomorrow, November 16.

As such, Alameda Unified School District, and Edison School as a result, will be closing all schools and district facilities on Friday, November 16th

All athletic practices, public meetings, performances, and other events will also be cancelled.   This includes the PTA Multicultural Potluck schedule for the evening of Thursday, November 15th.

Smoke from the Butte County fires and wind gusts are affecting the air quality throughout the Bay Area again today.  Checking the air quality this morning, the level indicated in Alameda is in the Unhealthy range (167) at 5:00 am today.  As a result, we will have students remain indoors for the day today.

Students will have indoor recess in the morning.  Teachers have also been advised to leave exterior doors and windows closed, and minimize running the heater or air conditioning, as this brings in air from outside into the room.  As we are on a minimum day today, only the morning recess is an issue.

We will update as needed as things change, and will contact parents to update on any changes as needed.

Sincerely,

Greg Sahakian

Principal, Edison School

In July 2018 the Board of Education approved changes to AUSD's student dress code policy.  This followed a process catalyzed by a group of middle school students and their teacher who advocated for change first at their school site level and later on a districtwide basis.

Implemented in August 2018, the revised dress code policy is based on three key principles:

1. All students are encouraged to dress in a manner that is comfortable and conducive to an active school day.

2. Students should be able to wear clothing without fear of or actual unnecessary discipline or body shaming.

3. The student dress code should serve to support all students to develop a body-positive self-image.

Now that the revised dress code has been in effect for 3 months, we are surveying stakeholder groups (students, staff, and families) to assess the experiences and perspectives with the change.  The links to the family and student surveys are below:

Family Survey

Student Survey

All responses will be kept confidential and aggregate data will only be shared by stakeholder group or by school site.  The overall data will be used by the dress code workgroup to assess the success of the pilot implementation, and inform potential revisions to the policy in future presentations to the Board of Education.

Our dress code web page includes a link to the pilot policy and related resources:

Thank you for your participation.

Dear parents and guardians,

In order to maintain a focus on learning, as well as eating healthy, please do not have students bring candy to school.

Each family has different views about their kids having candy, and we want to keep as consistent as possible.  For events such as Halloween, we ask that students enjoy their candy outside of school hours.

We will share this information with students here at school, so if you could reinforce this at home, we would greatly appreciate it.

In addition, we do have a no sharing food policy.  This also ensures the safety of those with allergies.
